“Macron Buses”: A Low-Cost Mode of Transportation Put to the Test of Sustainability and Desirability

Facilitating travel for all while simultaneously limiting CO2 emissions: that was the goal of Emmanuel Macron’s 2015 law liberalizing the market of intercity buses. But what has actually come of it? This research explores how this new market has evolved within the transportation system and seeks to understand who the users of the Macron buses really are—what are their motives, their practices, their representations and their experiences? The goal: to identify the extent to which this low-cost form of transportation can be a part of the transition towards sustainable and desired lifestyles.
