Rémi de Bercegol is a researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS; French National Center for Scientific Research), head of the social sciences department at the Institut Français de Pondichéry (French Institute of Pondicherry) in Puducherry, India (specifically the research unit Savoirs et Mondes Indiens – Indian Worlds and Knowledge; UAR 3330), and an associate member of the PRODIG research unit (Pôle de Recherche pour l’Organisation et la Diffusion de l’Information Géographique – Research Hub for the Organization and Diffusion of Geographical Information; UMR 8586). After obtaining his PhD within the LATTS research unit (Laboratoire Techniques, Territoires, Sociétés – Techniques, Territories and Societies Laboratory), he published a book on the municipal management of small towns in India, titled Petites villes et décentralisation en Inde (Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2015).
His research focuses primarily on the urbanization of the world and the transformation of cities in the Global South, which he analyzes principally through the lens of essential services (water, sanitation, waste management, and energy). He is particularly interested in the issue of waste recycling, and has helped to create exhibitions on the subject (La Mise en image du rebut / City of Waste) in conjunction with the SUD (Sociétés Urbaines et Déchets – Urban Societies and Waste) network, as well as a short film, titled The People of Waste.
