Christian Topalov

Christian Topalov is a sociologist and director of EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales – School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) in Paris. His publications include Naissance du chômeur, 1880‑1910 (Albin Michel, 1994) and a number of collective works, such as Laboratoires du nouveau siècle (Éditions de l’EHESS, 1999), La Ville des sciences sociales (with Bernard Lepetit; Belin, 2001) and Divisions de la ville (Éditions de la MSH, 2002). He has recently collated and commented the articles and manuscripts resulting from Durkheimian sociologist Maurice Halbwachs’s time in Chicago in 1930, in Écrits d’Amérique (Éditions de l’EHESS, 2012). In collaboration with Laurent Coudroy de Lille, Jean-Charles Depaule and Brigitte Marin, he also directed the international research programme that resulted in the publication of the multilingual historical dictionary L’Aventure des mots de la ville (Robert Laffont, 2010).
